The Lucky Stars play raucous, good time dance music that sets the mood for a rollicking Saturday night, as well as their very own brand of heart-broken blues that can provide the perfect soundtrack for the inevitable Sunday morning hangover. Influenced by the many Western Swing bands of the 1940s (Bob Wills, Tex Williams, Hank Penny), The Lucky Stars have created their own sound and their own songs, which pay tribute to the exuberant music of that era.
The band's current line-up includes Sage Guyton on vocals and rhythm guitar, the inimitable Jeremy "J.W." Wakefield (who has played with Wayne Hancock, D.J. Bonebrake, Dave Biller, and Asleep at the Wheel, to name but a few) on steel guitar and vocals, Russ Blake on Guitar, Wally Hersom (a founding member of Big Sandy's Fly-Rite Boys) on bass fiddle, and Dave Stuckey (of the Dave and Deke Combo and Dave Stuckey and the Rhythm Gang) on drums and vocals. With three vocalists to choose from, The Lucky Stars are able to provide a wide variety of moods and dance rhythms, ranging from jazz standards like "Dinah" and "Sweet Sue" to upbeat originals like "Rarin' to Go" and "Am I In Love (Or Am I Just Hungover)?"
To date, The Lucky Stars have released two full-length CDs: {>}Hollywood & Western (Ipecac Recordings), and {>}Stay Out Late With The Lucky Stars (Fate Records), as well as several seven-inch vinyl records.
Known for their well-crafted songwriting, sophisticated arrangements and considerable musicianship, The Lucky Stars have played nearly every kind of event, including music festivals in the U.S. and Europe, Cowboy poetry festivals, county fairs, musuem functions, swing dance seminars, weddings, divorces, parties, and every live music venue and honkytonk worth it's name in the Los Angeles area. The band has had great luck appealing to diverse audiences and a wide age spectrum, and they are equally at home performing for a room of World War II veterans at The Elks Lodge or opening for an all-ages Melvins show at The Whiskey A Go-Go. So, whether you feel like cutting a rug, or crying into your beer, The Lucky Stars have just the right musical accompaniment to suit your mood.
