OutWest Hour Radio Show #27 National Park Adventure

Join me, Bobbi Jean Bell, your "OutWest Scout," for a musical adventure that takes us from Eastern California to Wyoming and Arizona and on to Northern California. We'll explore the jewels of our National Parks. Our trail mix is one part Death Valley, one part Yellowstone, one part Grand Canyon, and one part Yosemite. Imagine you are enjoying this savory snack as the sun rises or sets, or under a full moon and star studded sky. Grab your favorite beverage (I suggest water), put on your best hiking boots and sun protection as we are leaving the famous Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley. I've got the trail mix and the map - let's go!

Our musical journey begins and ends with the classic, iconic Western song, "Ghost Riders in the Sky," written by Park Ranger Stan Jones while working at Death Valley National Monument in 1947. Little did he know that he composed one of the most recorded and performed songs of all time.

About this film - here is a recent description from the film's FACEBOOK Page

The identity or idea of the "cowboy" can vary wildly depending on people's preconceived notions about who this person is. Who exactly is this iconic American figure (and who is it not)?

In the world of “cowboying,” there are common subcategories including family ranch or small-outfit working cowboys, feedlot cowboys and even rodeo cowboys. While each of these groups work directly with livestock in some form or fashion, "Cowboys - A Documentary Portrait" focuses solely on the lives of big-outfit working ranch cowboys.

We might refer to this type of cowboy as the closest descendant – in a professional sense – of the trail-driving cowboys of the 1800s. Big-outfit cowboys live and work on extremely large, open-range ranches that often operate on several hundred thousand to more than one million acres of land. These ranches generally run a full crew of cowboys, ranging from 10 to 15 people, who live either at the ranch's bunkhouse or in remote cow camps. While the nature of the profession includes plenty of solitude by default, the cowboys regularly work together. Photo below courtesy of Cowboy-A Documentary Portrait

It's ZIP TIME! Musician John Zipperer Takes The OutWest Stage

SCVTV Presents The OutWest Concert Series:
An Evening with John Zipperer

A former TV actor and stuntman, JOHN ZIPPERER'S second chance came rolling down the highway of life, not on a carefully controlled movie or commercial set, but while changing a tire for a friend along the 285 freeway in Atlanta, GA. John was hit by a 10-wheel oil truck. After flying 40 feet and landing in the hospital, John was told by the critical care doctor, "You should be dead!" To John this seemed like a clear sign that life is, or could be, too short. He packed everything he owned into his 1976 Camaro and headed out to Los Angeles to pursue a life in music. It was ZipTime!

John's clear voice, infectious melodies and heartfelt lyrics reach fans in places that they didn't know existed. Soon everyone is singing along, swaying, chair dancing, head bobbing, and clapping. Fans remark repeatedly about the joy that is evident when the band is on stage - joy in their playing, joy for their audience, joy from their audience. John Zipperer delivers a unique and refreshing blend of rock, folk, country, and blues.

SCVTV Presents The OutWest Concert Series:
An Evening with Joyce Woodson

We had so much fun chatting with Joyce Woodson and enjoying her music on Campfire Cafe radio! Click here for the February 9, 2017 podcast.

Award winning singer/songwriter JOYCE WOODSON, is a Grammy-nominated performer and the recipient of the Western Music Association (WMA) 2014 Songwriter of the Year and 2008 Song of the Year. The Academy of Western Artists presented her the 2008 Female Performer of the Year. She has shared the stage with such Western music greats as Belinda Gail and Dave Stamey. She has performed at top folk and western clubs and festivals such as the Elko National Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering, the Cochise Cowboy Gathering, and the Autry Museum. Joyce's lovely voice and striking stage presence have been compared with Mary Chapin Carpenter.
